European bee-eaters actually spend most of the year in Africa, arriving here in early May to breed and raise their young. From mid-August, they gather in flocks and migrate through the region before flying to their wintering grounds in Africa in mid-September. These beautiful birds are very popular with photographers and I'm always happy when I find some away from the usual spots and can take photos in peace without disturbing the birds.
